Alphabet Sorting

I haven’t really pushed Little Brother to learn his letters yet. Big Brother had already shown a great interest in language long before he turned 3, so he was well on his way to knowing many of his letters by this age. Little Brother, however, is different…and I am perfectly okay with that! I try to sneak bits of learning here and there, whenever I can capture his attention. He really enjoyed this Alphabet Sorting activity, mostly because the alphabet was a “train”, but lost interest after about 6 or 7 minutes. He knows the letters of his name, so I’m not too worked up about it. The most important thing I can do as a parent of young children (especially boys) is to instill in them a love for learning…when it becomes a battle, that is when it needs to stop (at this age, anyway).

Here’s what you’ll need for this activity:  A complete alphabet poster/bulletin board set (mine is the one I used in  my classroom–you could also use index cards with every letter written on them) and alphabet magnets or puzzle pieces.  I picked up a box of random magnetic letters at a garage sale for 50 cents, so we used those.

1. Dump Lay your alphabet pieces out.

 

2. Have your child get started putting each letter on the appropriate letter on the floor.

 

The first letter in his name is “N”, so he was super excited to find an “n”.
