Shape Chick
One of my biggest pet peeves is “kid’s crafts” that look perfect…because I know that the child was not really one doing the craft, the parent/caregiver/teacher was. As you can tell right off the bat, this sweet chick was 100% Big Brother (with some much-needed guidance from me with the scissors, since he hardly ever cuts).
We managed to work in some shape practice and cutting skills between our multiple breathing treatments for Little Brother and frequent excursions to the bathroom for Big Brother. :)
Here’s what you’ll need: construction paper, marker, child scissors, and glue.
1. On the yellow paper, draw a large circle. Orange paper=triangle, White paper- 2 small circles, Black paper-2 smaller circles. |
3. Lay all the shapes out. Ask your child to find the triangle, biggest circle, smallest circles, etc. This is a great time to encourage your child to recognize shapes without “drilling” him/her. |
4. Add glue. |

There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Chick by Lucille Colandro
Thanks for this cute idea! My five-year-old had a great time making the darling chick.
We just did ours this morning. I let my 2 1/2 DD cut by herself and was QUITE surprised at how well she did without mommy interfering as much as I usually do. Hard to let go!!! Thanks for encouraging ME with a craft that encourages HER to be independent.
We made one of these yesterday. My daughter is pretty independent when it comes to crafting, but I usually cut everything out ahead of time. She did great with the scissors!
