Green Fizzy Fun
Welcome to Tot Chemistry 101! This fun and fizzy activity combines Science and St. Patrick’s Day! I first saw the idea on Grains of Rice and knew Big Brother would love it so much, he would go crazy (which, of course, he did)!
Here’s what you’ll need: a large pan, baking soda, vinegar, green food coloring, and a turkey baster (or medicine dropper).
1. Pour vinegar into the bowl and add a few drops of green food coloring. Stir. |
2. Dump a pile of baking soda onto the pan. Put the bowl of vinegar on the pan as well (to minimize mess). |
3. Give your little one the turkey baster (or medicine dropper) and let him/her watch the chemical reaction! |
Keep on fizzin’… |
’til you can’t fizz no more! :) |
I love vinegar and baking soda! So does my 3 year old… and his favorite color is green, you can't go wrong!
I'm decided to feature this post on my weekly High Five! finds this week.
Thank you for the inspiration!

Just read this 45 minutes ago, and we've been having fun ever since.
Gives me the idea to ease the boredom of my child …nice post!
Cheers!

my 2.5 year old LOVES this experiment. it never gets old, and i finally bought a gallon of vinegar because we were racing through all of our good stuff! i look forward to following your blog!
oh, and here's a link to our version of this activity: http://tinkerlab.com/2011/01/vinegar-and-baking-soda/
cheers!
I made homemade volcanoes with my first/second graders using this method. I used mini water bottles and then they molded clay around them. Then we put baking soda in the bottom and in a small container mixed some vinegar, a drop of liquid dish detergent and a few drops of red food coloring and we had a live volcano that erupted. If you ever do a volcano unit with your children perhaps you could do the volcanoes! So fun!
I just did this today with my boys and they loved it! Thank you for the idea!
