Day 3 of Creation: Flowers, Plants, & Trees

We had so much fun learning about Day 3 of God’s Creation! Here is the text to read with your child today:

“And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.” -Genesis 1: 9-13

As my brilliant-theologian-of-a-cousin brought to my attention, each new day of creation is dependent on the prior days of creation. Flowers, plants, and trees can’t grow without light (day 1), water (day 2), and air (day 2). Even on the third day, God had to create dry ground for the plants to grow before he created the plants. Days 1-3 are creating the environment for the rest of God’s creation! Big Brother and I enjoyed talking about how God had already created all the things the plants needed to grow!

Not only is today’s topic beneficial for studying God’s word, it is also a great science lesson as well! All seeds/plants need 3 things to survive:  sunlight, water, and air!
For today’s activity, we planted seeds. But not in a pot, we planted them in a special way…using a baseball card sleeve. This idea isn’t original to me, it is from the March 2011 issue of Family Fun Magazine.
Here’s what you’ll need:  potting soil (we didn’t have any so I used some soil from a whole in our yard), seeds (we used tomato seeds because that is what I had, but it would be best to use seeds that are faster-germinating, like peas or scarlett runner beans), trading card sleeve (hole-punched if necessary), suction cups with hooks, spoon, a straw (or toothpick), and a medicine syringe.
1. Use a spoon (or small shovel) to put the soil into the baseball card sleeve.
2. Put the suction cup hooks through the holes.
3. Hang on a window.
4. Place a straw in the center of one of the sleeve inserts.
5. Let your child carefully place the seeds into the straw. Tap the straw while taking it out to make sure all of the soil (and the seeds) come out before adding seeds to the next compartment.
6. Fill a medicine syringe with water (mine went to 1 tsp).
7. Let your child water each compartment each day (less/more depending on how much water the seed needs).
Enjoy watching the seeds germinate and sprout!  You will eventually need to transfer the seeds to a larger pot once they have sprouted.

And it really does work! This picture was taken almost 2 weeks after we planted the seeds!

And here’s a fun song to sing with your little one about seeds:
Have fun learning about God’s creation!

  1. Love it. Thanks so much for the inspiration. I have 3 (almost 4) yr old twin boys and we are not intending to send them to preschool yet if at all. I am working with them from home and your ideas have been invaluable. Love the love you share for God. You are right there is nothing better to share with our children.

  2. i saw that in the family fun magazine and wanted to try it, what a great idea to use it with creation!

    God bless~

  3. We are doing Day 3 of creation today (I hope, I need to find my hubby’s baseball cards for a sleeve!) and we have done Day 1 and 2. My 2 1/2 year old Luke is having fun with the projects and it’s fun to teach him the Bible in such an easy way! Thanks!

  4. We sing it
    “Day 3 Day 3
God made flowers and grass and trees
    Day 3 Day 3
God made flowers and grass and trees”

  5. What a great song to sing. We are currently doing Puggles Awana at church and are on day 3 of God’s creation and having so much fun with it. Watching these childrens’s faces it’s so special and I love and can’t wait to do this seed planting with my child while singing this song. Thank you so much!

  6. I am using all of this in our children’s department at church. The 3-5 year olds are learning the days of creation and are on day 3 right now. All of this info and the great ideas have been a huge hit!! Thank you for posting! P.S. They are loving the Days of Creation song!!

  7. Cute song! And a good idea too. My girlie asks tons of questions about what’s happening to the seeds when you put them into the soil and this is a smart way to show her the whole process. We’ve already “planted” lentil seeds on a wet cotton pad and they’re about 10 centimeterс tall. But I think your idea for learning about Day 3 of God’s Creation is going to be much more interesting for my girl. Thank you for this!
